Happy Halloween!

For several years, I have participated in a project called NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). The idea is to write a total of 50,000 words in the month of November. This comes out to 1,667 words per day. It’s a stretch goal without being unreasonable, even for students or parents or full-time professionals.

This month, I will be working on a novel about Phillis Wheatley. She is an African American poet that lived during the Revolutionary War and “New Republic” era. Her story is a fascinating one, although I really only have a surface understanding of it. I only had the idea yesterday, so I haven’t had much chance to do a lot of research. I’m hoping that in December, once I won’t be as worried about just getting words down, I can visit some places nearby where I may be able to get more information about her and then be able to incorporate that. But at least for right now, I’m just going to run with the little that I do know about her.

I’ll be tweeting about it (follow me on Twitter!), and I plan to write a few update posts checking in on my progress throughout the month here on my blog. If you are participating in NaNoWriMo, let me know! And wish me luck…
