I never watched The Office when it was originally on television. I remember hearing about it, vaguely, but it never really sparked my interest – even after seeing it pop up on Netflix. In the last few months, though, I finally gave it a shot. My brother recommended it, so I figured it was finally time.
I enjoyed it. It’s not necessarily my favorite TV show ever – though part of might just be since I’ve only seen it once – but there were a lot of things I liked about it. I thought I’d share a few things that stood out to me. Here are somethings that I enjoyed, or that I thought were particularly well done.
-
- Balance. I thought the show struck a very interesting balance between making the characters likable and making them real. They are all so imperfect, and just as they almost become unforgivable, we’re reminded of their humanity and we see small moments of them at their best. That happens with many of the characters in the show, and each time, it’s done very, very well.
- Lack of dialogue. I think the writing in The Office is fantastic, and some of where I think it shines is in what it chooses not to say. There’s one scene specifically (though I’m not sure what season or episode), where Dwight and Angela are the only ones in the office, and they barely exchange any words at all, but those short little scenes wit them, saying nothing, say so much!
- Cast. Steve Carell is the heart of this show and he is nothing short of phenomenal in the role of Michael Scott. The cast on the whole is lovely, but he is the best part of The Office. Period.
- It grows. I wasn’t that impressed as I started watching it. But the more I’ve thought about it, and started a slower rewatch of it, it is definitely growing on me.
